NGO promotes road safety
Road Safety Alert Foundation (Rosaf) says it is committed to promoting road safety measures in Karonga District.
Rosaf representative Daniel Wiseman said in an interview on Friday that they want to empower road users by promoting safe and affordable transport system in the district.

He said they will embark on road safety awareness that includes civic educating people on best practices and introduce road safety school programmes to instil safe road habits in learners.
“We will also encourage walking and cycling initiatives to promote safe and sustainable mobility options and conduct road safety audits to assess road safety conditions,” said Wiseman.
He further said they will fight for inclusive mobility programmes to ensure accessibility and safety for all road users, including vulnerable groups.
Karonga district director of health services David Sibale said between 2022 and 2024, the district’s hospitals registered 1 783 road accidents which resulted in 50 deaths.
“We commend Rosaf for the initiative which might help reduce road accidents as 95 percent of the recorded road accidents in the past three years were caused by motorcycle operators,” he said.
Karonga resident Walusungu Phiri welcomed the initiative, saying road accidents were claiming people’s lives.
He said: “Road accidents affect many people, including family members and other dependents. As such, it is good to prevent them.
“I would like the initiative to intensify awareness among motorcycle operators in the district. I see many motorcyclists riding without crash helmets.”
Phiri also urged passengers to demand crash helmets when they hire motorcyclists.
